Something True by Malia Mallory

Something True by Malia Mallory

Review copy granted through NetGalley

Summary

Successful children's musician Shelley Taylor sings for all kids, but especially the sick ones. After her little sister died in childhood, Shelley founded the music charity KC's Kidz to entertain hospitalized children.

She didn't sign up to babysit a rockstar.

Irish bad boy superstar Liam Smith is in trouble with the law--again--and needs to perform community service. KC's Kidz seems like the perfect fit, especially since Shelley's as curvy as his favorite guitar and he wants to play her.

Liam's deep green eyes strike a chord in Shelley, and she makes him want to sing a different tune. But Liam lives in a spotlight so white hot it might burn them both before they discover the true music inside their hearts.

SOMETHING TRUE was light and airy. It was predictable and an easy, quick read. In SOMETHING TRUE was have two musical people whose worlds are forced to collide and neither one of them prepared for the romance or self-discovery that follows.

This book, in essence, was a filler book. It won’t put you in or take you out of a book hangover. It won’t rock your world or make it crumble, it simply is. The problems that arose were easily mended and the writing was decent. If anything the book was a bit rushed. The two main characters seemed very. . .laid back?

SOMETHING TRUE was an easy read. In the end it’s not something that I’d really recommend or really re-read.

So, falling in love with a rock-star. Total everyday occurrence, wouldn't you say?

#BookLook #28 Kiss Kill Vanish

Kiss Kill Vanish {Book Look}

Valentina Cruz no longer exists.

One moment, she was wrapped in Emilio’s arms, melting into his kiss. The next, she was witnessing the unthinkable: a murder in cold blood, ordered by her father and carried out by her boyfriend. When Emilio pulled the trigger, Valentina disappeared. She made a split-second decision to shed her identity and flee her life of privilege, leaving the glittering parties and sultry nightlife of Miami far behind.

She doesn’t know how to explain to herself what she saw. All she knows now is that nothing she believed about her family, her heart, or Emilio’s love, was real.

She can change her name and deny her past, but Valentina can’t run from the truth. The lines between right and wrong, and trust and betrayal, will be blurred beyond recognition as she untangles the deceptions of the two men she once loved and races to find her own truth.

Let's Talk About the Delirium Pilot: It's On The Screen #1

First off, if you haven't watched it yet, go here and watch it. It's okay. You can read this after.

WHY HELLO THERE!!! So you've watched the pilot, hmm? What did you think? Personally, I actually quite liked it. I mean, I think to get a whole freaking lot of it, you'd have to have read the book first. But, y'all should be doing that anyway. At least I really hope y'all do.

What is Delirium by Lauren Oliver about? It's about finding love where love is deemed illegal and irradiated with a special procedure. It's about hope, and loss and friendship. Delirium is about Lena and Alex and the movement against the procedure. Its about a good girl gone bad and trying to find your place in a society that controls your thoughts. It's about a society that doesn't understand that heartbreak and falling in love are natural: needed.

Now let's talk about the Pilot. When I was watching the pilot, I tweeted with the hashtag #DeliriumPilot and I hope y'all did too, because there is a whole lot to say.

The Cast.

Emma Roberts, I think, did a really good job of being Lena. She wasn't the exact (I mean when are they ever) Lena I pictured in my head, but she still conveyed that sense of helplessness and confusion, but also that sense of courage that Lena is so well known for.

Daren Kagasoff, while very nice to look at, is in no way, shape or form my Alex. He played his well but that is not Alex, y'all. *shakes head*

Gregg Sulkin as Julian. *chuckles* Every time I think of him, I think of Wizards of Waverly place and him being a werewolf. So. Uhm. Lol. That's totally not what I was thinking of for Julian.

The Actual Show.

Dear Lord, this thing was rushed. They tried to jam the whole first book into one episode. Although it was a good show, it was missing a whole freaking lot. *wags finger and shakes head disapprovingly*

So let's chat! What did y'all think of this one? Was it everything you imagined? Were you disappointed? Isn't Alex totally SAWOON WORTHY!? Leave all your thoughts in the comments.

ARC Review: The Kiss of Deception

The Kiss of Deception by Mary E Pearson
Published July 15, 2014

Thank you NetGalley and publisher for granting me a copy to review. In no way did this influence my opinion.

Premise

In this timeless new trilogy about love and sacrifice, a princess must find her place in a reborn world.

In a society steeped in tradition, Princess Lia’s life follows a preordained course. As First Daughter, she is expected to have the revered gift of sight—but she doesn’t—and she knows her parents are perpetrating a sham when they arrange her marriage to secure an alliance with a neighboring kingdom—to a prince she has never met.

On the morning of her wedding, Lia flees to a distant village. She settles into a new life, hopeful when two mysterious and handsome strangers arrive—and unaware that one is the jilted prince and the other an assasin sent to kill her. Deception abounds, and Lia finds herself on the brink of unlocking perilous secrets—even as she finds herself falling in love.

If I could describe this book in one single word, that word would be stunning. The writing was gorgeous and the plot riveting. Also, two gorgeous guys who are falling for our main girl? Both who could either be the Prince or the Assassin. I know I had my personal favorite, and I think y’all will too when you read The Kiss of Deception. Because you will read it.

This book was positively epic. NO! Epic squared. I loved the writing and the details were so vivid and I could see absolutely everything in this book like I was seeing it before my eyes.

It all starts with a Princess who doesn’t want her destiny has the bravery to change it. She runs from her arranged marriage with her best friend and goes to a no so nearby town and takes up residence there. She stays in hiding but does not know she was followed by the Prince who she was supposed to marry and the assassin who was supposed to kill her. After becoming her friend, getting close to her, seeing who she really is, they both fall in love with her. She only falls in love with one. It’s sort of a sad little love triangle that isn’t exactly a love triangle. Ish. Thing. Anyways, she liked the guy I liked so all is well. Except for that part. . . and that part. . . and that- OKAY ALL IS NOT WELL. Sheesh.

This lovely not-so-little book has it all: action and romance and adventure. It was rather glorious. With the lyrical writing, believable characters and emotion that felt real, this was a very me book.

One of my favorite (and most confusing) parts was how you never really knew (well until the close to end) which one of the boys was the prince and which one was the assassin. I really liked this; it made the book seem even more mysterious than it already was.

The Kiss of Deception was about fate and choosing your own destiny. And I’ve got to say, I loved every second of it.

This book was magnificent. I really hope that y'all read it. Also, how do you feel about love triangles?

ARC Review: Perfect Kind of Trouble by Chelsea Fine

Perfect Kind of Trouble by Chelsea Fine

Arc received from Forever and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Goodreads / Review for Book One

Summary

Sometimes when perfect falls apart, a little trouble fixes everything . . .

Twenty-one-year-old Kayla Turner has lost everything. After spending most of her life taking care of her ailing mother, she just wants to spot a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel. So when her late father-a man she barely knew-leaves her an inheritance, she finally breathes a sigh of relief . . . until she learns the inheritance comes with strings. Strings in the form of handsome playboy Daren Ackwood, her father's protégé. To see any of her inheritance, she's forced to team up with him. From his expensive car to those sexy dimples, Kayla's seen his type before. But Daren isn't who he seems to be . . .

Struggling to make amends for his family's mistakes, Daren has a life more Oliver Twist than Richie Rich these days. He's beyond grateful that James Turner included him in his will, but working with Turner's princess of a daughter to fulfill his cryptic last wish is making Daren wonder if being broke is really so bad. Still, she's just as beautiful as she is stubborn, and the more time he spends with Kayla, the less it feels right being without her. Soon Daren and Kayla begin to wonder if maybe the best gift Kayla's dad could have left them . . . was each other.

A letter to Chelsea Fine, the author of THE BEST KIND OF BROKEN and PERFECT KIND OF TROUBLE:

I really don’t know how you do it. You make everything seem so perfectly real, so perfectly heart wrenching, so perfectly imperfect. Also, you make the guys extra hot. (that’s 10 points right there, madam) I mean it, please tell me your secret. How did you make someone who is so broken and beaten and battered a bruised so swoony? Was it his ability to just be happy? What it the way he looked at her? Like he’d never seen someone who was so. . .modest? So real? I don’t even really know what the word it. *chuckles* I don’t really know what the word it but I love it. I loved every bloody second of it. And no I am not British. But I’ve always wanted to say that. It worked there right? I think so. Oh, I’m getting off track. Sorry.
I adore PERFECT KIND OF TROUBLE just as much as I loved the first book in the series. The writing style that you have is just so freaking gorgeous. It makes every emotion, every thought and every sound seem to be amplified so that you can’t help but to sympathize with everything that out main characters have been thought. Even if the fact that they are so quick to make assumptions annoyed me to no end. Seriously. Both of them. They were like the male and female version of the other.

You know how they say opposites attract. These two are seriously (and I mean seriously) the male and female versions of the other. I don’t know how you did it. I’m so used to opposites. Great minds think alike? Birds of a feather flock together? I don’t care what saying people are going to use when they read this, but whatever it is the chemistry (and physics) is real. And is beautiful.

I love how you intertwined their stories together. I love how they knew the same man but saw two sides. I love how nothing is as it seems. I love how they acted together. I loved how they acted when they’re apart. I love Daren because he says things like “I see you” and how he makes it seem like those three words are a thousand times more romantic than I love you. When the characters got to know each other, they did the best to make the other happy. Even if they didn’t consciously do it. Plus, their thoughts? PERFECT! They were true to life thoughts and make me giggle and squeal and smile like a complete idiot. It was amazing.
Back to the smiling part. Daren knew, after she ranted of course (cause what girl doesn’t rant) that she wanted to been seen for her soul and her heart and not for her outward appearance (apparently she was a total knockout). He tried his best to make her feel like he saw her. You see why the whole I see you thing is so romantic now?

Ohmigod, I haven’t even talked about the scavenger hunt yet. That’s what brought them together. How did you think of that? Because that was pure brilliance I tell you. Pure. Brilliance.

I mean, they’re handcuffed together to find money (which may or may not be only $20) but they end up finding themselves. *le major sigh* And this is why I love New Adult. This book says it all. Everything.

Yeah. So thanks for writing it.

So I decided to write a letter. It was mostly a ramble though. OH! AND Y'ALL NEED TO READ ALL CHELSEA FINE BOOKS.

Waiting on Wednesday

Princess Aislynn knows all about the curse. Its magic is a part of her, like her awkward nose and thin fingers. It’s also something she can’t control. And girls who can’t control their abilities have a tendency to disappear. So for her own protection, Aislynn is sworn into the Order of Fairy Godmothers where she must spend the rest of her life chaste and devoted to serving another royal family.

As Aislynn’s feelings threaten to undo the sacred vows she has taken, she risks not only her own life but Linnea’s as well. With the princess engaged to a devoted follower of The Path, there are some who would do anything to keep Aislynn from straying.

Jared’s guitar was beautiful, with a smooth white faceplate, gleaming struts, and a shiny fingerboard. My fingers itched to touch the silvery strings, to form a chord and let it ring out through the amp, to hear what it sounded like without all the other instruments accompanying it. And if I was honest, I wanted to close my eyes and pretend I was on stage, playing for a crowd, hearing them scream for me. The longing I felt every time I went to a concert stirred up in me again. It wouldn’t hurt if I played one chord, right? That was it. One chord, and I’d put it back. No one would ever know.

Before I could stop myself, I picked up the guitar and threw the strap over my head. It settled against my shoulder, and with one hand on the fret board and the other on the strings, I was home. I closed my eyes, picturing Jared when he was on stage and how his talented fingers had moved across the guitar. I imagined him singing my favorite song of theirs, “Behind the Mask,” and the words and notes melted together in my head. I strummed the guitar, the sound ringing from the amp, the vibrations traveling up the ground and into my feet. God, I loved this guitar. It sounded just as good as my own, if not better.

Now that I had the guitar in my hands, the compulsion to play was irresistible. What was one more chord, right? I was alone and the room was soundproof. The door had locked behind me. Kyle was dealing with Becca, and he’d given me permission to come in here anyway.

I knew it was a bad idea. I knew I should put the guitar down and walk out of the room. But I started strumming anyway.

I was hesitant at first, but once I started, I couldn’t stop. My hands found the chords automatically, and the words flowed out of me with the music. Exhilaration swept through me with each note, and I closed my eyes and let the song take me away. Soon I was belting out the words, shredding the guitar like I was on stage playing for a massive crowd. I’d never do this in front of anyone else, but here, alone with this guitar, I could pretend. I could let myself go.

And then I opened my eyes and wanted to die.

Jared stood in front of me, his eyes wide and mouth open slightly. He must have come in while I was playing. How much did he hear? Or worse, see?

My fingers slipped off the strings with a screech, and I nearly dropped the guitar. Thank god for the strap. “I’m so sorry. Kyle gave me the key and I was just—”

There was no way to explain what was going on, so I shut up. I’d been singing his lyrics, playing the song he’d written. Not to mention, I’d been using his guitar. That was like wearing someone else’s underwear. You didn’t just play another person’s guitar without their permission.

I yanked the guitar off and tried to put it back, but knocked the stand over instead. Hands shaking, it took me two tries to right it again, all while Jared stood there, gaping at me. Why didn’t he say anything? Was he so angry he couldn’t speak? I set the guitar down carefully, then backed away like it was on fire—and ran straight into the drum set. Cymbals crashed as I fell against it, knocking the equipment all over the floor. Great, now he must think I’m a stalker and a complete klutz. I jumped up too fast, and my legs were so unsteady I started to topple over toward the table. Jared caught me before we had another disaster, his hands gripping my arms to balance me.

“You okay?” he asked, his blue eyes holding mine and making my heart pound even faster. If I stared into those eyes too long, I’d fall into them completely.

EXCERPT

Ben

I love the angry ones.
Of course, anyone who knows me would argue that I love any and all women, and I can’t exactly disagree. But I love the angry ones the most. They’re a challenge to be conquered, the reason for their fury usually fitting neatly into three buckets: insecure, scorned, hormonal.
And this chick gazing up at me with fire in her caramel eyes?
I’m betting on bucket number two.
“My, what an awfully bright red shirt you have on,” she pushes out between gritted teeth, as if she’s trying to be polite but can’t hide her disdain.
I didn’t know what I was walking into when the punk-rock chick with the crazy-ass muscular body waved us over, but her friend with the purple hair and her back to me had me intrigued. Now that I’m getting a good look at her face, I know who I’m spending my last night with in Cancún. She’s not what some would call traditionally “pretty.” Her eyes are slightly too big and far apart, her nose is slightly too long and slender, and her lips—though nice and wide—are on the thin side. Yet something about all of that put together makes her sexy as hell. Maybe it’s the little nose ring. Or maybe it’s the way her decent-sized tits are pressing up against me, her low V-neck tank top—a casual shirt, telling me she’s not trying to pick anyone up—giving me a fine view of her cleavage. Whatever it is, my dick is certainly pleased. “You like it?” I ask.
An irritated glare flickers to the material. “No.”
I can’t help but chuckle at her candor. “Will you at least give me a head start before you gore me?”
Those thin lip curls into a condescending smirk. “Bulls don’t see color. That’s a myth.”
The only thing I love more than an angry girl is a smart, angry girl.
This is going to be fun.
“Well, how about I solve the problem for you.” I take a step back from her and swiftly yank my shirt off, exposing six days of suntanned skin and an upper body that I know looks damn appealing because I work my ass off to keep it that way. The random catcalls from the tables around confirm it.
And then I simply stand there and grin like the cocky ass that I am as Angry Girl can’t keep her eyes from scanning the muscles I’ve honed since my college football days, her lips parting ever so subtly. I see the shift in her, the moment where she realizes that, though she’d prefer to castrate the entire male species right now, she can’t ignore her attraction to me.
At least, that’s what I want to see.

A Time Before Blogs

I have a confession to make. I have a hard time with blogging.

Not with reading them or commenting or interacting with bloggers, but with writing a blog. I resisted starting one for a long time, even though it’s high on the author marketing to-do list. Now that I do have a blog, the subject is something I feel is almost a cop-out because it’s so simple—reviews on other books rather than my own generated thoughts.

I’ll tell you why that is.

In the summer of 1999, just after my high school graduation, I discovered a website that allowed members to keep an online journal. This wasn’t any site, though. It had a specific purpose, and its name was Open Diary.

A Diary, Open to the World

The idea behind the site was more than just journaling, chronicling one’s day, or putting down random thoughts. Instead, it was a diary, something the participants took quite seriously. We’d write out innermost thoughts, hopes and dreams that we didn’t share with others; we’d bare our souls.

A journal, on the other hand, is a log of events that happened in a day. Maybe it delves into what the journaler thinks of the day, but mostly it’s a surface look at someone’s life. A blog, to me anyway, is even less personal: how-to’s or random thoughts or lists of things we think are cool. Yet the blog posts I enjoy the most are the more personal ones—the ones I see bloggers apologize in advance for, before opening their souls.

Opendiary.com was full of people being honest and writing those personal blog posts I love. They were people struggling with something in their lives—secrets they kept, lies they told, and the dropping of the mask they wore to the rest of the world. And I was one of those people.

The Only Way to Get to the Other Side Is to Slog Through

My difficulties weren’t as dramatic as some of my diary friends’. I didn’t cut myself, harbor suicidal thoughts, or battle with how to tell my parents I was gay. No, my problem was crippling shyness and a mountain of guilt from the “sins” my religion, born-again Christianity, taught me that I had committed. I found that the more I tried to overcome my “sin,” the more obsessive I became. Yet only in retrospect do I realize that was the heart of my true struggle.

As I went off to college in the fall of 1999, my diary became my companion. Sometimes I would spend hours at night writing out what happened in my day. It was a time of growth in my life, of moving from an extremely timid teenager to a more confident and happy new adult.

I had the challenge of being away from a stable, happy home for the first time. I loved it because I’ve always been independent but was frightened because I was so young and sheltered. I had the challenge of mingling with all types of people, of all types of backgrounds, ethnicities, and moral structure, outside my 1,200-person white Christian small town.

I found that, as I documented my struggles, my tears over rejections from crushes, difficulties keeping up with the amount of classwork I kept piling on myself (because who takes the minimum credit requirements? To the max!), and frustrations with roommates and their boyfriends, I had a narration of the growth of a person.

If You’re Not Honest With Yourself, How Can You Be Honest With Others?

I gradually opened up to my diary. I was surprised at how difficult it was to be honest with myself, even in the entries I marked “private.” But as the years wore on and I grew more self-aware, I realized that honesty was the only way I could overcome the mental barriers I had erected over two decades of living. Admitting that I had negative thoughts, about myself, about my life, even about my religion, was the first step toward becoming a whole person.

It took five years of keeping a diary before I moved from terrible shyness, brought on by feelings of unworthiness, into something better. My growth has continued over the last fifteen years, and I’m sure it’s not at an end. The catalyst is honesty, first to myself and then to a group of anonymous supportive friends going through the same struggle—if not over the same thing. Being truthful helped me become a whole person.

The most succinct way of summarizing my most important lesson is that no matter what your thought is, ignoring it and pushing it down will never make it go away. Whether you’re ashamed because you’re overweight or because you’re jealous of your sister’s success in life or because the baby you’ve wanted so badly didn’t push aside the dark depression you’ve always suffered, you heal when you bring those thoughts into the light. Being honest with the ugly, naked truth is the only way I’ve found to stop the negativity.

What about you? Have you ever journaled or kept a diary? Has it helped you as a person?

Fan Art by Sarah Tregay #BookBlitz + #Giveaway

Fan Art
Release Date: 06/17/14
Harper Teen

Summary from Goodreads:
When the picture tells the story…

Senior year is almost over, and Jamie Peterson has a big problem. Not college—that’s all set. Not prom—he’ll find a date somehow. No, it’s the worst problem of all: he’s fallen for his best friend.

As much as Jamie tries to keep it under wraps, everyone seems to know where his affections lie, and the giggling girls in art class are determined to help Jamie get together with Mason. But Jamie isn’t sure if that’s what he wants—because as much as Jamie would like to come clean to Mason, what if the truth ruins everything? What if there are no more road trips, taco dinners, or movie nights? Does he dare risk a childhood friendship for romance?

This book is about what happens when a picture reveals what we can’t say, when art is truer than life, and how falling in love is easy, except when it’s not. Fan Art explores the joys and pains of friendship, of pressing boundaries, and how facing our worst fears can sometimes lead us to what we want most.
