Something Strange and Deadly #1
Summary
The year is 1876, and there’s something strange and deadly loose in Philadelphia…

Eleanor Fitt has a lot to worry about. Her brother has gone missing, her family has fallen on hard times, and her mother is determined to marry her off to any rich young man who walks by. But this is nothing compared to what she’s just read in the newspaper—

The Dead are rising in Philadelphia.

And then, in a frightening attack, a zombie delivers a letter to Eleanor…from her brother.

Whoever is controlling the Dead army has taken her brother as well. If Eleanor is going to find him, she’ll have to venture into the lab of the notorious Spirit-Hunters, who protect the city from supernatural forces. But as Eleanor spends more time with the Spirit-Hunters, including their maddeningly stubborn yet handsome inventor, Daniel, the situation becomes dire. And now, not only is her reputation on the line, but her very life may hang in the balance.

This book was an enticing mixture of Alice in Zombieland and Dearly, Departed. Set in a true Victorian background, this novel played with the idea of life after death, zombies and women who think.

When Eleanor's brother doesn't come back as planned and a note from him comes in the hands of a zombie, she's confused to say the least. There are secrets swarming around her like flies: her father's death, her suitor's ugly past, her brother's true whereabouts and Daniel's connection with all of it.

For me, I was disappointed. There was so much hype over this book. 5 Star ratings and people telling me I just had to read it or I would die. I didn't want to die so I thought I'd give it a shot. Also, her dress (the girl on the cover's) is really pretty. But there is no correlation between the cover and the story. There was too much going on and the sad part was, none of it was remotly interesting.

My mind was separated, going back and forth between zombies and love triangles and creepy feelings and dynamite and rich people and inventions and world traveling and voodoo and spirits. My mind was close to exploding. But, I muscled through it because I felt it was my duty to my fellow bibliophiles.

The set up was very much like the Victorian-ness of Dearly, Departed without the steam punk, modern twist and had the evil zombie's and zombie fighters like in Alice in Zombie Land. I expected more steam punk. I wanted more. More!!

Overall, this was a quick read. Easy and safe. It won't rip your heart out or steal your soul. Would I read it again? Nope. Sorry. *shrugs*

Hope this review helped you decide whatever there as to decide!! Share the bloggy love <3 Until next time(:

  1. Oh how disappointing. I'd never heard of this book and the blurb alone would have made me 1-click. Then I looked at the price and that's too rich for my blood for just an "okay" read. I'll still add it to my TBR and perhaps grab it down the line. There are just so many books competing for my attention right now- hard to spend time with one that might not be all that amazing. Thanks for the review!

  2. It sucks when a book that has so much hype and that you are really excited to read just doesn't live up to the hype. I haven't read this one yet, but it has been on my TBR list for the longest time. And I think it's going to stay there for a while considering this review. I'll read it eventually though.
    Great review :D.

  3. I hate it when you have high expectations and a book just does not live up to to them. Better luck next time!
