Summary

It's a night like any other on board the Icarus. Then, catastrophe strikes: the massive luxury spaceliner is yanked out of hyperspace and plummets into the nearest planet. Lilac LaRoux and Tarver Merendsen survive. And they seem to be alone.

Lilac is the daughter of the richest man in the universe. Tarver comes from nothing, a young war hero who learned long ago that girls like Lilac are more trouble than they’re worth. But with only each other to rely on, Lilac and Tarver must work together, making a tortuous journey across the eerie, deserted terrain to seek help.

Then, against all odds, Lilac and Tarver find a strange blessing in the tragedy that has thrown them into each other’s arms. Without the hope of a future together in their own world, they begin to wonder—would they be better off staying here forever?

Everything changes when they uncover the truth behind the chilling whispers that haunt their every step. Lilac and Tarver may find a way off this planet. But they won’t be the same people who landed on it.

A timeless love story, THESE BROKEN STARS sets into motion a sweeping science fiction series of companion novels. The Starbound Trilogy: Three worlds. Three love stories. One enemy.

Hey y'all. First off, let's chat about that drop dead gorgeous cover. Maybe it's because I like space so much...okay, it's because I like space so much...and hot guys..and wicked cool dresses, that this cover is so appealing to me. And the font used for the title doesn't take away from the book at all. Mmm. Perfection. If I ever write a book, whoever did this cover is totally doing mine.

Okay, now onto the actual book. It did not live up to my expectations. It was definitely unique and it felt like a books that I should love to pieces...but I just...didn't.

We start off at a party worth of Gatsby among the stars. The dresses, the lights the spaceship with the doomed name: everything. Our man of the hour, Tarver, is surveying the room and talking up the rich folks who just love a good rags to riches story. When the space ship crashes all bets are off and the daughter of the richest man in the universe and the boy who is a recent war hero are stuck with each other.

For the most part I understood what was going on, it was just near the end that I thought everything was going south. The way the two main characters interacted with each other drove me a tad bit insane.

Through the book, I gradually became disconnected with the characters and I don't know why. In the beginning, they felt whole but by the end, I honestly was so confused that they felt non-existent. Not good.

I wanted to love it: the lights, the alien voices, the strange experiments and the crash landing but ti was all just too much for my teenage mind to handle.

In the end I liked it to a certain degree, and at that certain degree I wanted to pull my hair out.

Also, Lilac really, really reminded me of

Three Stars

Happy reading

  1. Oh too bad you didn't love this one, Jackie! I can see what you mean about the ending, but instead of that making me feel less for the characters, it made me feel more for them, so I enjoyed that a lot.

And you're right, it's one of the most beautiful covers, ever :) I hope you'll enjoy your next book more!

    Have a terrific Tuesday :)

  2. It sort of sucks when books don't live up to your expectations. I've been seeing this book everywhere and now, I'm having second thoughts of whether to pick it up or not. When I've seen a book loved by so many, I tend to raise my expectations pretty high. Anyway, great review!

  3. I know how much it sucks when everyone around you seems to love a book, and you create all these high expectations, but then the book is a complete fail for you. I've seen a few mixed reviews on These Broken Stars, but with such an amazing cover, and some people completely head over heels for it, I need to give it a shot. And really? Alien voices? COOL!

  4. I was one of the few people who wasn't in love with it. I thought it was okay but I also found it really predictable except for the plot twist (which I really liked but it wasn't enough for me to actually like the book).
