ARC Review: Full Measures by Rebecca Yarros

Goodreads
Source: Netgalley

Summary

Three knocks can change everything…

"She knew. That’s why Mom hadn’t opened the door. She knew he was dead."

Twenty years as an army brat and Ember Howard knew, too. The soldiers at the door meant her dad was never coming home. What she didn’t know was how she would find the strength to singlehandedly care for her crumbling family when her mom falls apart.

Then Josh Walker enters her life. Hockey star, her new next-door neighbor, and not to mention the most delicious hands that insist on saving her over and over again. He has a way of erasing the pain with a single look, a single touch. As much as she wants to turn off her feelings and endure the heartache on her own, she can’t deny their intense attraction.

Until Josh’s secret shatters their world. And Ember must decide if he’s worth the risk that comes with loving a man who could strip her bare.

"We're unbelievable together. I've never felt that before. You stripped my soul clean."

This book has it all: a way too hot romance with witty language and a guy that is her ‘whatever’ in the best way possible. And a main girl who is strong but needs someone too but doesn’t want anyone to get too close. And it was amazing. We have a hot hockey player who lives by a moment and a main girl who has every detail planned down to pin point. This lovely book was a mix of hot and cold and the perfect New Adult for anyone new to the genre. Not only did it make you feel, it made you think. It had the whole self-discovery thing going on that I think makes New Adult so great. With the tragedy of her dad’s death and her mom’s depression, FULL MEASURE was stunning, and a must read.

From the very first sentence, I adored this book. Ember had a unique and completely relatable voice that will speak to everyone. Rebecca Yarros has the gift to be able to make the emotions raw and real. I was impressed with her word choice and the way she constructed the story. It felt like a dance. When Ember’s mother won’t open the door, Ember opens it for her only to find her worst fear on the other side. They then received the news that changed their lives forever. From then on, Ember feels responsible for her family falling apart.

Then we have Josh who houses the one thing that can destroy everything that he gains with Ember. After of course he saves her from her cheating EX boyfriend. God, I hate that boy. Not Josh, the other one. *shudders* Josh is pretty amazing. He’s her ‘whatever’ and he’s there for her and he DOESN’T GIVE UP! Ember pushes him away so much but he just like ‘I ain’t going anywhere sweetheart’ and I was like ‘YES!’ and then he plays hockey and coaches her little brother and *fans self*

The character development in this books was amazing. I felt like I knew all of the characters and they all played a specific role in the book: the roommate, the best friend, the grandmas and then the two girls who stalked hockey players. I felt like I knew everyone.

Overall this is a note-worthy novel and if you don’t read it I WILL judge you.

Song of the book: Waiting for Superman by Daughtry

This has been a good bookish year for me. Most of the books I've read thus far have been rather epic. How has y'all's year been?
