Summary

When eighteen-year-old Kara Jones gets into a car accident on the way home from college, she’s left with more than a few bruised ribs, a busted cell phone, and a totaled car. After a slip-up at the hospital, she’s shaken to discover that her family isn’t all it seems. And now her mother’s strange behavior and willingness to do anything to protect her secrets—including pulling Kara out of school—have Kara floundering in the dark.

Enter Derek Miller, a former classmate who’s dealing with family issues of his own. His nerdy charm is too much for Kara to resist, and she’s even more amazed when he agrees to help her dig into her mother’s past. Together they investigate her mother’s old friends and boyfriends, hoping to discover who Kara really is. Instead, they find disturbing connections to the dark history of Kent State University, and an ever expanding maze of mystery surrounding Kara’s birth.

As Kara and Derek chase secrets, she realizes he’s the only person she can trust. But as they get closer to the truth, the disturbing answers reveal a web of evil far darker and further reaching then they’d imagined, leaving Kara to wish she’d never asked the questions in the first place, and to wonder if some secrets are better left untold…

Interview with Kate

1.       Hello! Thanks so much for joining me over on my blog. Let’s just jump right into the questions. You have a book!! It looks so good and I can’t wait to read it. Where did you get the idea for the book?
Thanks! I actually got the idea for my book while watching a new TV show in early 2013. Unfortunately, I can’t say which one because it might ruin the story for you. But I can say this, there was a little boy in the show (just a minor character), and I kept wondering how he was handling all the drama. From there the idea for my book popped into my head. But I had to sit on it for a few months while I worked out a few details.

2.       If you could describe your book in three words, what would they be?
Emotional, Romantic, Mystery

3.       I love the cover! Can you tell us who designed it?
I honestly have no idea, lol. My publisher, Etopia Pressl, assigned one of their cover designers but they never told me who it was. Whoever did it, I’m very happy with the results.

4.       Now let’s talk about you. If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go?
Italy. I’ve been to Europe a few times, but haven’t made it there yet.

5.       Who would your plus one be on this trip?
My husband for sure. We’ve been married for almost 12 years and keep saying we’re going to take a kid-free trip, but thanks to his busy schedule it hasn’t happened yet.

6.       If pigs were taking over the world, would you side with them or would your inner Katniss come and rebel?
I’ve never been a follower, so I would definitely fight.

7.       How do you feel about cowboys?
Well, I live in Oklahoma at the moment, and I see a lot of cowboy boots and hats. It isn’t quite as glamorous as the spicy covers of romance novels make it seem.

8.       If you could eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Chocolate. I have a serious addiction.

9.       Do you have any pets?
I have four kids. That’s enough responsibility for me.

10.   Which character in your book do you most connect to?
Derek probably, because I’m a nerd too.

11.   Did you have a playlist in mind when you wrote the book?
Yes, and I have it all ready for people to listen too! http://grooveshark.com/#!/playlist/COLLISION/90309234

12.   Thanks so much for joining me! Anything else you’d like to add before we go?
I do want to add that I have another book coming out later this summer. Broken World is the first book in my post-apocalyptic/zombie series, and I’m so excited about it! It’s a favorite among my friends/beta readers, and also appeals to people who aren’t zombie fans. The story focuses on survival and relationships more than the blood and gore.

Thank you so much for having me! I suppose I'd just like to say that I hope people enjoy the book!

Kate L. Mary is a stay-at-home mother of four and an Air Force wife. She spent most of her life in a small town just north of Dayton, Ohio where she and her husband met at the age of twelve. Since their marriage in 2002, they have lived in Georgia, Mississippi, South Carolina, and California.

Kate’s love of books and writing has helped her survive countless husbandless nights.  She enjoys any post-apocalyptic story – especially if zombies are involved – as long as there is a romantic twist to give the story hope. Kate prefers nerdy, non-traditional heroes that can make you laugh to hunky pieces of man-meat, and her love of wine and chocolate is legendary among her friends and family. She currently resides in Oklahoma with her husband and children.
