ARC Review: White Hot Kiss

White Hot Kiss by Jennifer L. Armentrount

Thank you to Netgalley and Harlequin for giving me a copy to review. In no way did this sway my opinion.

Summary

One kiss could be the last.

Seventeen-year-old Layla just wants to be normal. But with a kiss that kills anything with a soul, she's anything but normal. Half demon, half gargoyle, Layla has abilities no one else possesses.

Raised among the Wardens—a race of gargoyles tasked with hunting demons and keeping humanity safe—Layla tries to fit in, but that means hiding her own dark side from those she loves the most. Especially Zayne, the swoon-worthy, incredibly gorgeous and completely off-limits Warden she's crushed on since forever.

Then she meets Roth—a tattooed, sinfully hot demon who claims to know all her secrets. Layla knows she should stay away, but she's not sure she wants to—especially when that whole no-kissing thing isn't an issue, considering Roth has no soul.

But when Layla discovers she's the reason for the violent demon uprising, trusting Roth could not only ruin her chances with Zayne…it could brand her a traitor to her family. Worse yet, it could become a one-way ticket to the end of the world.

I don’t think I’ve ever witnessed an author who was able to make every single paranormal thing with legs too hot to handle. Let’s see, she’s done Demigods, Aliens and now Gargoyles? I mean, it’s no surprise I loved this book. I’ve said more than one that I ADORE Gargoyles and I want more of them in the literary world. Especially ones like the ones in WHITE HOT KISS and THE BEAUTIFUL AND THE CURSED. Both are utterly swoon-worthy with main characters that are kick-butt. But the MC in WHITE HOT KISS had a few imperfections that I as a reader, could not look over. One of them is being mean to perfectly nice people, even if they are going after the guy you’ve loved forever.

Layla. She’s half demon half warden. And her mama is someone we all know about. Her past is covered in secrets and lost memories. Layla, although I liked her, annoyed me equally as much. She certainly had spirit but she was so confused with, well, everything. And I guess I would be too if my ‘family’ lied to me with practically every word they said and the half of myself I was most in tune with was the one side I was supposed to hate. Hate with a fiery passion, none the less. All her life she’s been looked at as an unnatural hybrid who should be condemned to death. She can steal your soul with a kiss. Since she was young, she’s been in love with the totally off limits warden. Who has a soul. Of course, then you have Roth *fans self* who of course is a demon who has no soul! Problem solved right?

Wrong.

With some wacky demon dude who feels like an apocalypse is the solution for everyone’s problems, including his, and a kind of cheesy love triangle, Layla has her hand full. If she chooses to stay alone forever and love Zayne (the warden) from a distance, she’ll be miserable. If she chooses the utterly heart stopping Roth, she’ll be happy, but it might also mean the end of the world.

Overall, this book was mostly just a fun read in-between books. I love this one because it didn’t require much (or any really) thought process and that is sort of what I needed. It was cute with an ending that FREAKING RIPPED MY SOUL TO SHREDS and Roth. Need I say more? I mean, Roth guys. Roth. Demon. Who’d of thought I liked the demon more than out little Warden Gargoyle friend. But I do.

I really, really do. Roth has secrets too of course, but HE NAMES HIS SNAKE BAMBI AND DRAGON THUMPER! AND HAS KITTENS. *takes a deep breath* I’m fine. I’m fine.

Just read the book y’all. Read. The. Book. With the author’s wicked ability to transform the book into reality, this is another one of her books that you do not want to miss. Pinkie Swear.

I lost myself the moment I found you.

Soooooooo.....who's read this one? Aren't gargoyles AWESOMESAUCE?! I really need someone to rant to.

  1. More Gargoyles-YESSS.

I actually read THE BEAUTIFUL AND THE CURSED a few weeks back and boy I loved it! I'm a little wary when it comes to JLA's books because I feel that they're just not for me? But my friend swears by this one and since you seem to have enjoyed it, I think I'll give White Hot Kiss a go. :)

P.S.-Love the new look, when the page was loading I double checked to see if it was the correct blog because your header was gone. Lol!
Also just took the Jane Austen Character Quiz-Got Elizabeth Bennet too! *high five* :D

    1. TBATC Was rather epic, wasn't it?! And most of JLA's books are around three stars (mainly because I can't connect to the characters) but this one, I thought, was better than most! And THANKS :3 I'd been wanting a new look for a while. The blog button's the same though! What can I say? I loooove owls! AND WE'RE AUSTEN SISTERS <333

      Lol. Happy reading

  2. I do love JLA's books, I do, but the problem with some of them I have is the originality, you know? I enjoyed Obsidian (haven't read the rest of the series yet), because I haven't read a good alien infused high school type since Roswell High. But with the reason I never started the Covenant series, was because I'd heard a lot about the lots of similarities to Vampire Academy, which I'd read first and loved. So yeah, but I've never read any to do with Gargoyles so, that should be fun.

Her books have that "feel" to them, the fun, kickass feisty feel that I love, and like you said, they're kind of ones you don't have to be too focused on to enjoy. Which sometimes you just need, I haven't read White Hot Kiss yet, but totally am when I'm in need of one of those.

    1. EXACTLY! They have the feeling that makes you want to read them, but in essence, they really are filler books. No matter how fun they are. And I really liked Obsidian! And I LOVE Roswell High <3 Like really love. If I could marry a show, that'd be the show I'd marry. Or Chuck Bass. You know, from Gossip Girl. I MEAN HIS VOICE. Oh god, I'm rambling....
