Thank you Netgalley for providing me a copy to review. In no way did this sway my opinion.

Summary

Legends say a syphon can drain a mage dry. He’ll brave the danger. Will she?

Someone’s playing pranks. The body of the late Casteel patriarch has been stolen and gifted to the family’s enemy, the powerful Rallises. As far as Bronte Casteel is concerned, they can keep it. She hasn’t spoken to her family in thirteen years, not since they exiled her from society for her lack of mage power. But she’s a syphon mage, able drain another mage’s power. Syphons’ destinies are always the same: death by fiery stake. She hides her secret by living among the Nons--powerless humans and the lowest class in the Republic. When her family orders her to go plead for the body’s return, she comes face to face with the one man who knows her secret.

Colonel Vincent Rallis isn’t letting his syphon get away this time. Not when she’s under suspicion of body-napping and aiding anti-mage terrorists. He’ll prove her innocence whether she wants him to or not, and then convince her they belong together...forever.
Vincent’s help comes with a steep price: Bronte must reveal her power. The inevitable ensuing witch-hunt and trial would be bad enough, but even a tough girl might buckle if her prosecutors are her own parents.

When you think about a book that entices you to read it in just one day because it is THAT awesome, you’ll be thinking of this book. I love the characters, the backstory, the cool powers and the time period. It. Was. Amazing. No, scratch that-AMAZING. Much better.

We get taken to a time where magic is real but so are Nons, also known as humans. Then you have the people with magic who basically rule over tiny kingdoms and are called Senators.  Our main girl in a royal but had been basically thrown out by her parents for, what? 16 years? Anyways, then they suddenly decide to acknowledge her existence and BAM! So our story begins. Right off the bat Bronte is running. Running from Vincent and from her parents and from her past, and more than an of that- her power.

I absolutely love Bronte and Vincent’s story. It has action and mystery and hidden elements and evil parents and a long lost sister (who, by the way, should get her own story) and LOVE! I really liked the whole element of Bronte running from her destiny. In the beginning she seemed weak, but as the story progressed, you could tell that she had fire. Bronte was a mixture of sweet and spicy. Her character was just amazing. She was trying to do the right thing but made some rather, hasty, decisions. And she tried to deny loving Vincent to save him from her.

Overall, the book now has its place on my favorites shelf, thanks to the magical elements, epic love story, and a family quarrel that will stun readers everywhere.

Also, where's book two when you NEED IT?

This book needs more hype! MORE HYPE BECAUSE ALL Y'ALL WHO HAVEN'T READ IT ARE MISSING OUT. *regains composure*
What are some books that y'all think need more hype? Leave it in the comments!

  1. So I guess it takes the usual from the genre and makes it different? Because it does sound different and I'll try anything with Magic. But, love that it has a Royalty aspect too. I read All That Glows by Ryan Graudin back in January (which I didn't like) but it was the Royalty aspect that drew me to that too. I don't usually, but I just find them fun. Plus, a romance you'll actually love? YES. Glad you enjoyed it so much! :)

    1. I haven't read All That Glows yet. . . but the cover is beautiful, no? And that sucks that you didn't like it. When you get around to this one, I hope you fell just as much in love with it was I did <3
