I heard from a little bird that you have a thing for stalking awesome people. Let me help!

Sci-fi junkie, video game nerd, and wannabe manga artist, Erin Hayes writes a lot of things. Sometimes she writes books, like the fantasy mystery Death is but a Dream and the sci-fi middle grade book Jacob Smith is Incredibly Average.

You can reach her at tiptoegirl87@gmail.com and she’ll be happy to chat. Especially if you want to debate Star Wars.

How Reading has Impacted My Writing.

Hi there!

I’m Erin Hayes and I’m the author of the horror novel Fractured and a few other books across a wide variety of genres. I’m sci-fi nerd, a geek, and a bookworm. I’ve been a reader ever since I could read ”See Spot Run”, and I even sat by myself during recess in elementary school to read. If it weren’t for my voracious reading, I probably would have never written a single book.

Here’s why:

I devoured every book I could get my hands on as a child. From Redwall to Narnia and a Wrinkle in Time, I moved across universes and experienced different worlds. They opened up my imagination to infinite possibilities.

It was around this time that I started writing my own novels. While other kids played soccer or volleyball, I sat at my computer and typed. Pretty impressive for a nine year old, eh?

As I grew, my reading palette expanded as well. I learned more of the characters I liked to read. I learned how dialogue flowed and how different characters spoke. I learned story arcs and how keep the plot moving.

I took techniques from the books I read and combined them into my own. My books got more complex until they became what they are today. The best way to learn writing is to be inspired by reading. As I read somewhere, “Read more than you write.” I try to do just that.

I only took one creative writing class my entire life, and I was told that genre fiction like horror would never make it. If not for my reading, I would have stopped at that class and never pursued being an author.

So, here I am today as an author. And I have these different worlds to thank for their inspiration.

Thank you so much for having me today! Keep reading and be inspired with your imaginations in whatever you do!

  1. I do think writing would come easier for someone who has read a lot of books - well maybe not easier but you'd be better at it for having read so much. And writing at 9 is def impressive. I'm always impressed at bloggers who are in 7-8th grade, even! Managing a blog takes time and patience that I would not have had at that age haha.
